South Australian Whale Centre

The story of Encounter Bay's whales

Interpretive whale centre on the Victor Harbor foreshore, home to an excellent education gallery and the best vantage point for winter whale spotting.

Whales of Encounter Bay

The South Australian Whale Centre is a three-level interpretive centre on the Victor Harbor foreshore that tells the story of the southern right whales that return to Encounter Bay each year to calve and mate (typically May to October). Exhibits cover whale biology, the 19th-century whaling industry that operated from Encounter Bay, marine ecology and the Ngarrindjeri cultural relationship with whales.

What to see

  • Full-size whale skeletons and interpretive displays
  • The live whale sightings log for the Encounter Coast
